Pleasing or Provocative

The youth of America enjoyed performing the Twist because it was seen as the first freeing dance move throughout history. Yet older generations felt it was an inappropriate display of movement, especially for national television.  The twist was the first dance in which the hips were moved in a rotating and thrusting position. Some thought the dance was too provocative to be danced in public, yet many still enjoyed performing it. Entertainers such as Elvis Presley did not let harsh criticism keep him from expressing himself through this particular dance. Some felt that this vulgar display of movement corrupted the nation’s youth and caused society to become more sexually expressive. Though the Twist suffered from harsh criticism it was still enjoyed and performed by many and is still carried on today.
